Shanghai or Wuxi?
The page is now deliberately split into two areas. Shanghai is the big entry point. Wuxi is the personal side trip nearby, and it was much stronger than I expected.
Shanghai 上海
Shanghai as a modern entry point
For many travellers, Shanghai is the easier first large Chinese city: metro, river, skyline, the Bund, Pudong and international energy. The city is quickly accessible, but not shallow.
Anyone who sees Shanghai only as a skyline misses the transitions between old river space, modern city and everyday movement. That is why Wuxi works so well with Shanghai: not as a replacement, but as a quieter nearby contrast.

The Bund is the classic waterfront promenade along the Huangpu River. On one side you see old banks, trading houses and historic architecture, while Pudong rises on the opposite bank. That makes the Bund the best first place to understand Shanghai: history, river and modern city face each other directly.
Pudong is the modern high rise side east of the Huangpu River. It is where you find the Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Tower and many of the city’s famous skyscrapers. Compared with Beijing or historical China routes, Pudong feels very international, vertical and focused on the present.
Shanghai Disneyland is in the eastern part of the city. Many hotels around the area are geared towards park visitors. Check transfer times and shuttle schedules before booking.
Planning Shanghai Disneyland
Shanghai Disneyland is not just a small extra stop. It can easily fill a full travel day. If you want to visit the park, choose your hotel carefully. The official resort hotels have their own connections to the park. Many hotels in the wider area also advertise shuttle or transfer options to Disneyland.
My practical advice: do not look only at the distance in kilometres. Actual transfer time, early departures, evening return options and whether the shuttle really runs every day matter more.
Note on the Maglev train to Pudong
The fast magnetic levitation train to Pudong Airport does not leave from Shanghai Railway Station. It runs between Longyang Road Station and Shanghai Pudong International Airport.
That is useful, but you have to plan it correctly. From Shanghai Railway Station, you first need to reach Longyang Road Station by metro or taxi. With luggage, I would allow roughly an extra half hour depending on the connection. So you cannot take the Maglev directly from Shanghai Railway Station to Pudong Airport.
Wuxi 无锡
Wuxi: close to Shanghai, but a different feeling
If Shanghai feels too large, Wuxi is a very good addition. Depending on station and train, the trip from Shanghai to Wuxi often takes a little over half an hour to roughly one hour. That makes Wuxi suitable as a short side trip, but also as a quieter stop of its own.
I spent almost two weeks in Wuxi myself. For me, it was not just a dot on the map, but a pleasant, smaller and surprisingly beautiful addition to Shanghai.
Wuxi in photos
Wuxi impressed me more than I expected. Huishan Ancient Town at night, the hike above the city and the modern metro show very different sides of the city.

Huishan Ancient Town and Xihui Park
In Wuxi, the area around Huishan Ancient Town and Xihui Park fits my photos much better: lanterns at night, canals, boats, old lanes and the illuminated pagoda in the background.
Right next to it, there are wooded paths, viewpoints and temple areas. This mix of old town, water, light, hills and local life is what made Wuxi stronger than I expected.
I also liked the hike above Wuxi. If you want the exact route, just contact me. We felt very welcome at the Buddhist temple along the way.
Personal hotel tip: Somerset Harmony City Wuxi
My personal hotel tip for Wuxi is Somerset Harmony City Wuxi. It works well if you stay longer than one night and want a practical, modern place to stay. Wuxi is especially pleasant when you give the city some time instead of rushing through it.
Somerset Harmony City Wuxi is a serviced apartment hotel. For me, that fits Wuxi well because it feels more like arriving than just sleeping somewhere for one night.
Wuxi and e bikes
Wuxi is also an important location for electric two wheelers. Xishan District in particular is known as a strong centre for e bikes, e scooters, batteries, motors and supplier parts. I would not claim that almost everything worldwide comes from Wuxi. The cleaner wording is: Wuxi is one of the important clusters of this industry in China.

Shanghai combines well with Huangshan, Xidi, Qiandao Lake, Hainan or Wuxi. If you only do Shanghai, you see a world city. If you add Wuxi, you also get a smaller city, water, light, Buddhist motifs and a better sense of how many interesting places sit right next to the famous names.
