Qinhuangdao and surroundings
Qinhuangdao stands for the Bohai Sea, coast and the connection to the Great Wall region near Shanhaiguan. The place is not a typical first name on German language China lists.
That is exactly why Qinhuangdao fits China bereisen: personally experienced, slightly away from the standard route and useful as an addition to Beijing or Northeast China.

Haitian Yise Hotel: a good beach base
I stayed at the Haitian Yise Hotel. It is almost directly by the white sandy beach and works well if Qinhuangdao is more than a short stop. I stayed there for four nights and would have liked to stay longer.
The location was the main point: beach walks start almost directly from the hotel, the gym was pleasant, Xigang Garden is just around the corner and restaurants are easy to reach. When you leave the hotel, it is roughly 200 metres to a very good restaurant on the corner; there are several other places to eat nearby.
The hotel is not in the immediate city centre. That does not have to be a disadvantage. The taxi ride from Qinhuangdao high speed railway station was straightforward, and for this kind of stay the quieter seaside location is the real advantage.
What does Bohai Sea mean?
Qinhuangdao lies on the Bohai Sea. This is the inner sea area in northeastern China, between the region around Beijing and Tianjin, Hebei, Liaoning and Shandong. For travellers, the practical meaning is simple: Qinhuangdao is not a tropical beach destination, but a northern Chinese coastal city with beach, port, promenade and sea views.
Harbour walk: Xigang Garden
A strong place for a walk is Xigang Garden, Chinese 西港花园. The area belongs to the old port of Qinhuangdao and is also described as the Qinhuangdao Port Industrial Tourism Area. That mix is what makes it interesting: harbour atmosphere, old industry and waterfront paths rather than a classic shopping street.
If you have time in Qinhuangdao, it is a good place for an evening walk or a longer round through the harbour area. It feels more like a converted port quarter than a normal pedestrian street.

Two more places in Qinhuangdao
I liked the Lianfeng Mountain Scenic Area a lot: granite rocks, small paths, steps cut into stone and quieter corners that feel very different from beach or harbour. If you stay in Qinhuangdao for a few days, it is a strong addition to the coast.
Laolongtou, the “Old Dragon’s Head”, is the well known point where the Great Wall symbolically reaches the sea. Together with Shanhaiguan, it is the classic Great Wall connection in this region. If you do not want to see Qinhuangdao only as a beach destination, this is the historical counterpoint.

Strong travel tip: Great Wall from Qinhuangdao
A separate trip to the Great Wall region is worth considering from Qinhuangdao. From my hotel it was easy by taxi; as a rough guide, expect a good half hour. The advantage is simple: coast, seaside hotel and Great Wall visit can be combined without returning to Beijing.
The contrast is the point: beach and harbour in the morning or evening, then wall, hills and historic sites in between. For me, that mix is exactly why Qinhuangdao is more than just an unfamiliar name on the coast.
