Great Wall from Beijing
Visiting the Great Wall from Beijing does not have to mean choosing the same classic section everyone else visits. Huanghuacheng is not quite as close to Beijing as some other Great Wall sections, but it is usually quieter and less crowded.
The Ming Tombs combine well with Huanghuacheng because you pass close to them on the way. Together, they make a natural day trip: imperial history first, then the Great Wall, water and landscape.

My 2026 visit: Huanghuacheng Lakeside Great Wall
In 2026, I travelled by taxi from Changping to the Great Wall at Huanghuacheng. My starting point was the hotel 千子桐·初见酒店 (Qianzitong·First Seeing Hotel). This section is often listed in English as Huanghuacheng Water Great Wall or Huanghuacheng Lakeside Great Wall. For a shorter visit, the West Gate is the better choice: 黄花城水长城西门. For a longer walk or hike, aim for the East Gate: 黄花城水长城东门. The Ming Tombs are directly on the way. For a long day out, you can combine the Ming Tombs and Huanghuacheng in one trip.
Once there, you can simply walk around. Depending on what is running that day, boat rides or cable car options may also be available. I would allow about three to five hours there; combined with the Ming Tombs, it becomes a full day trip. For travellers without their own car, getting there and back is the main practical point. That is why it is useful to check tickets and tours for Huanghuacheng in advance.
The return trip was also by taxi. I used the Didi app. In more remote places such as Huanghuacheng, it is worth planning the return trip early or booking a taxi in advance. I explain this in more detail on my page about taxis in China.

Huanghuacheng is not the kind of place where you simply get out, take one photo and leave. You move between the wall, the lake, paths, boats and viewpoints, and that is what makes this section feel more alive than many standard Great Wall stops.
The Ming Tombs are so close to the route that they combine well with Huanghuacheng. With a taxi, it becomes a balanced day trip: imperial history first, then the Great Wall, water and landscape.
Huanghuacheng is not only for hikers. You can take short walks, cover longer sections, stay by the lake or go out on the water by boat. That also gives children more to do than a quick photo stop at the Great Wall.
